What Is It
A quick room-cooling sizing method estimates BTU/hr needed by multiplying floor area by a climate-based factor (20-35 BTU/hr per sq ft), then adjusting for insulation quality, sun exposure, ceiling height and occupant count above two people. It gives a reasonable estimate for a single room or small space; whole-house sizing should use a full Manual J load calculation.
How to Calculate
Enter the room's floor area, ceiling height, climate zone, insulation quality, number of occupants and sun exposure. The calculator applies the appropriate factors and returns the estimated cooling load in BTU/hr and tons, plus the nearest standard AC unit size.
Example
A 300 sq ft room in a moderate climate with average insulation, 2 occupants and average sun exposure: cooling load = 300 × 25 × 1.0 × 1.0 × 1.0 = 7,500 BTU/hr, rounding up to a standard 8,000 BTU/hr unit.
Recommendations
This rule-of-thumb method is appropriate for sizing a single room or window/mini-split unit. For whole-building HVAC design or permit submittals, a full ACCA Manual J load calculation (which accounts for wall assemblies, window U-values, infiltration and duct losses in detail) is the industry standard and often required by code.
